Discover Portscatho

Nestled on the Roseland Peninsula — one of Cornwall's most unspoilt corners — Portscatho is a small east-facing fishing village brimming with character. Its name in Cornish means "Rowing Boat Harbour", and the ancient stone jetty still shelters a few local fishing boats today.

The village faces east into Gerrans Bay, which means it's sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly winds — perfect for swimming off the sandy beach right in the village, or the larger Porthcurnick Beach just around the bay, home to the famous Hidden Hut café.

Wander the village and you'll find art galleries showcasing local talent, the 18th-century Plume of Feathers pub serving St Austell ales and good food, Ralph's Stores for your essentials, and a small but vibrant community that makes visitors feel genuinely welcome.

Five minutes up the hill lies the twin village of Gerrans, with its medieval parish church — a landmark for generations of fishermen — its own pub, and breathtaking views across the bay.

Beach & Swimming

A sandy cove fronts the village, sheltered and safe for families. Porthcurnick Beach, a short stroll away, is wider and backed by the acclaimed Hidden Hut beachside café.

Pubs & Dining

The Plume of Feathers is a dog-friendly 18th-century local serving fine ales. The Standard Inn is less than half a mile away, run by celebrity chef Simon Stallard, and offers amazing food with a beautiful garden.

Art & Culture

Galleries dot the village, showcasing work inspired by the Cornish landscape. The Harbour Gallery is a favourite, with paintings, pottery and unique jewellery.

Walking & Coastpath

A superb circular walk heads west along the coast path to St Anthony Head lighthouse — used in the TV series Fraggle Rock — with panoramic views of Falmouth Bay.

History

Once one of Cornwall's busiest pilchard ports, the village has a WWII memorial dedicated to 26,380 servicemen, and an old seaman's chapel on Chapel Point.

Getting Here

The most scenic approach is via the King Harry Ferry across the River Fal from Truro. Falmouth is 12 miles away; Truro around 14 miles via the ferry.
